Chief Minister to hold referendum next month

October 16, 2024

Chief Minister, Ben Smith are listening to calls for him to resign from other MPs in his party. However, he states “I am doing all I can to put the economy and the island back on track, however, being a crown dependency makes it more difficult”. He then goes on to say he will hold a referendum next month, the 3rd of March about leaving the Crown Dependency. He says, “Switching to euros will help stabilise the economy, which I am sure most islanders want. I will listen to the results of the referendum, if we win I will not resign, if we lose, I will resign effective immediate and call a general election. It is clear that islanders opinions have changed over the last few months, so that is why, I am asking islanders to give us a chance, and vote to leave the Crown Dependency, so I can strengthen the economy and put the island back on track”.
