Post your story

Everyone can report news.

Something happened where you are. A road closed, a shop opened, a crowd gathered, a decision landed on your street before it reached anyone else's. You do not need a press pass to write that down — you need somewhere to publish it. That is what this is.

Breaking News Maker is a community newsroom. Readers file the stories, we publish them, and every report is bylined so the next reader knows exactly where it came from and how far it has been checked. No account, no application, no editor deciding you are not the right sort of person to be writing.

Filing a report

  1. Get the app

    Reports are filed from the Breaking News Maker app. It is free, and it does not ask you to sign up for anything — open it and you can start writing.

  2. Pick your section

    World, politics, business, health, entertainment, travel, sports, technology, lifestyle — or file it under Custom if it does not belong to any of them. The section decides where your report shows up on this site.

  3. Write the headline and the story

    Lead with what happened. Say who told you, what you saw yourself, and what you are not sure about — a report that is honest about its gaps is worth more than one that papers over them.

  4. Add a photo

    One picture, with a credit line if it is not yours. Photos are checked before a report goes public, so there is a short wait between filing and publishing.

  5. Publish and share it

    Your report gets its own page on this site with its own link. Send that link to anyone — it opens in a browser, no app required — and it appears in its section, in the feed, and on most read if people read it.

How your report is labelled

Every story on this site carries those two labels and a byline saying it was submitted by a reader. That is not a disclaimer and it is not a demotion — it is the same thing a newspaper does when it prints Opinion, Analysis or Reporting contributed by above a piece. It tells the reader what they are holding.

Reports are published as submitted. Nobody here rewrites your story, and nobody independently confirms it either. If you want your account to carry weight, say where your information came from — that is what makes a community report worth reading.

What gets taken down

Almost nothing, and then a short list of things without exception. A report comes down when it:

  • puts words in a real person's mouth, or claims to be them;
  • targets, harasses or exposes a private individual;
  • uses a photo that is not the filer's to use, or shows someone who did not agree to be shown;
  • invents a public-safety emergency, a death, or anything else that causes real harm in the ten seconds before somebody checks;
  • is illegal, or is an advert wearing a headline.

Photos are reviewed before publication, and any reader can flag a story from the app or from the contact page. We read every flag.
